I need to find a city that is not too big and not too small with affordable home prices and low cost of living.

At the same time, low crime with good public schools is important. I have a 5-yr old kid, but would love to live near the city center area.

I guess that is a tall order! I am tired of the leftist politics and high taxes in Chicago. Nonetheless, I want to go to a city that has an urban feel and culture like Chicago with lots of things to do like street festivals in the summer, but does not have to a big mega city like Chicago, San Fran or NYC.
