Built in , Brixton Windmill was working as a flour mill in this area long before it became popular. These days it is a great place to come for a quiet five minutes to yourself or for a picnic with your family.

You can check dates here. Brockwell Park is huge park located about 12 minutes from the underground station by walking. Also, Hootananny often has reggae nights too which are always huge amounts of fun. Here, underneath the church is Gremio de Brixton , a bar in the church. Just opposite the underground station there is a semi-permanent memorial to him, a huge piece of Ziggy Stardust painting on the wall. This is one of the most up-and-coming areas of London so see it now before it changes!

I used to live ion the Brixton area and it is fantastic! There are so many areas of London that have been gentrified into blandness, but Brixton is one of those rare places where more affluent people have moved in, but it has retained that character it always had.

Multicultural Brixton used to be an extremely wealthy settlement outside London. In the 18th century, the area boasted lush farmland and a market garden known for its game, strawberries and windmills. Today, Brixton is best known for its vibrant markets and its position as the centre of London's Caribbean community a quarter of the population is of African and Caribbean descent.

One windmill still stands, although it is in a derelict condition. Electric Avenue, inspiration for the Eddy Grant hit, got its name for being the first shopping street in London to be lit by electricity, and is now the site of the popular Brixton Market. It wasn't the only "first" for the area: London's first department store, Bon Marche, was built in Brixton in A series of colourful murals were commissioned by the council after the riots of and many of them still exist today, including one outside the Brixton Academy.

Likewise the big names rolled in: The Prodigy, Basement Jaxx and Massive Attack are just some of the iconic acts that have taken to the stage. Fast forward 20 years, and the Dogstar is still going strong.

The fashion has arguably improved, but the quality of the DJs remains the same. This legendary venue continues to attract the best up-and-coming and established artists.

You know, those nights where you end up the dancefloor or any other surface — tables are good too in the wee hours of the morning? Hootananny was made for those nights. It goes without saying that you need some amazing tunes to tempt you up onto the dancefloor. Believe me, Hootananny has got that sorted with a calendar of fantastic, multicultural bands and artists to get you moving. Long before Netflix had us all cozied up at home, a trip to the flicks was the only way to catch up on the latest pop culture releases.
