David waller london

This was a place that attracted fantastically driven and intelligent young men, many of whom went on to do their own great things up north. I enjoyed the earlier parts of the book most, particularly the story of Samuel Bentham, brother of the famous philosopher, Jeremy. Why couldn't I have a career like his. It was interesting reading the backgrounds to the apprentices.

One of them, James Nasmyth, was never actually an apprentice because he had taught himself everything. He had built a forge in his bedroom and a steam engine. I never even mastered my Meccano set although I doubt my parents would have let me build a forge in my bedroom. Nasmyth's family was relatively well off, but many of Maundslay's men were from humble backgrounds, who largely taught themselves what they needed to know, before setting off for London.

My favourite was Joseph Whitworth, who spent hours and hours and hours constructing a perfectly flat plane, well actually three because that's how many that were needed to ensure the planes were truly flat.

That takes some dedication. Later chapters go into the sociological aspects, in particular, industrial relations with the workforce. Nasmyth was hostile to them, Whitworth was more sympathetic.

If you have ever read Elizabeth Gaskell's factory novels then you will get the idea.
